OUGD501 End of Module Evaluation

The essay question for OUGD501 ‘To what extent does Packaging enhance Brand Identity and Consumer Desire?’ was chosen to allow me to expand on my interest in packaging design and further my knowledge. The research and the analysis helped further my understanding of the design industry in terms of packaging, colours and how companies work to distribute their products to the consumer. It is interesting how companies use pastiche for their products to show they are different. Brands show they are different by advertising different needs and benefits of the products so that the consumer can choose what best suit them and their needs. The impact on society and how we perceive ourselves is also a massive benefactor of the type of products we buy. The things we buy can affect how we are seen and therefore people buy things to make themselves look good for society’s standards. Therefore, it is important how something is designed in order for it to appear alluring to the consumer so that they can take and interest and buy it. This has allowed me to understand how to advertise and design the outcome for the visual investigation for my target audience.
The visual investigation of the brief has helped me to develop my illustration/drawing skills and understand the type of packaging I like to design which is cosmetic/beauty packaging. The outcome of the designs clearly had shown the relevance of the final products and the essay as I made sure to consider stock, colour and the benefits each soap help. Although my essay did not include anything about sustainability, it is important to consider it since from other research, people are becoming more environmentally conscious and can potentially affect the way in which people view packaging and the product.
